Steiff Teddy Bears In 1880 Steiff was formed, with the first big seller being the elephant, in 1902 her nephew Richard Steiff designed the "Teddy Bear 55PB", the break through being in 1906 when an American trader discovered the bears and marketed them under the name teddy bear - after the American president Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt.
